THE ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERIENCE

Startup Pirates is not an event. It is a whole experience for life.

In this one-week program, our pirates dive in the startup world and have the opportunity and the tools to develop a business idea from scratch.

But if you think Startup Pirates is only about developing one idea, think again. This is a whole experience, the ultimate entrepreneurship trial, the entrance to a unique and exclusive worldwide community of change-makers and the boost you've been waiting for.

We gather the most promising aspiring entrepreneurs and fearless experienced guests to share and learn together in a combination of workshops, mentoring, inspirational moments and some wild surprises.

This is not the place to be taught, is the place to learn!

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin

Mariana Duarte Silva

Speaker

After obtaining a degree in Business Administration, a young and wide-eyed Madame found herself on an a relatively risk-free career path, working as a product manager for one of Portugal’s biggest media groups. However, anyone who has known Mariana for even a fraction of a minute can pretty much guess what happened soon thereafter. The ever enthusiastic and adventurous young woman quickly tired of the 9 to 5, play-it-safe lifestyle and in 2007 she left Lisbon for the hustle and bustle of London, one of the world’s most exciting cities, in search of bigger and better things. She consulted for Citizensound music and officially founded her own talent agency Madame Management in 2008. Her charm, quick wit, and determination to get things done, quickly endeared her to some of London’s movers and shakers and she held events at such venues and clubs such as Plastic People, AKA, The Egg, Sketch, Cargo, Islington Metal Works and Bar Music Hall. Returning to Lisbon she re-focused her career as a press and communications specialist for music festivals such as Sónar Galicia, Semibreve, Neopop and Lisbon nightclubs Ministerium and Faktory as well as continuing to promote her own events. Her latest project is Village Underground Lisboa, of which she is a co-founder. Launching in February 2014, built around refurbished shipping containers and double decker busses, Village Underground will provide Lisbon with a new cultural centre as well as affordable workspace for those in the creative industries. It is the first international branch of the highly acclaimed project of the same name in London.

Vasco Gaspar

Speaker

Vasco Gaspar is believes that a “new world” is possible in organizations. A world where wise and compassionate leaders are really able to “lead from the future as it emerges” as well as to inspire people to flourish into their highest potential, igniting a real evolution in teams and organizations.
With a toolbox filled with “cutting-edge” awareness-based technologies (e.g. Mindfulness, Integral Model, Presencing, Element-B) his dream is to co-create this future – and he’s already doing it at different organizations, or with the general public as a social entrepreneur (ZorBuddha project).
He was recently invited to be part of the first teacher training program of Search Inside Yourself (Google’s Mindfulness Based Emotional Intelligence program) which, in the long run, has the intention to create the conditions for world peace.

Speaker

Everything around us, including ourselves, is made out of energy. At the core of any atom there is energy vibrating at a different frequency, and this for me is fascinating. The way we walk, the words we speak, the way we handle money, relationships, knowledge, life, anything we believe we own, is based on a constant flow of energy, and we are responsible for it. If it gets stuck or flows, we should be aware of how to manage it. I don´t want to talk to much about it, but more to show you how to see it , feel it and use it in your advantage.

João Remondes

I’m not your average marketing manager. I tried to be one, I was one but I was not happy. After working for 10 years in marketing, I found that you should do what you love, what drives you and what makes you, YOU. I do love brands, I truly love marketing, I really love (good) design and I love (passionate) people, to connect with them and feel something.  Now this is what I do: I work with brands (and people) to make them realize their full potential. I’m flying solo now, setting my own pace and working with the brands (and people) that truly believe in.

Lina Figueira

Ahoy Pirates! My name is Lina and during my life I’ve experienced different ways of learning and teaching. First as a primary teacher, a wonderful experience that teach me that in life, we should always make things with joy, passion, not being afraid to make it different, try new approaches, always learning, see the world colorful and most important always “keeping it simple”. Later on, as a consultant and trainer I use the same principles with adults, using creativity and innovation to solve problems and implement change. Recently, I´ve been feeling the call of social causes…and that´s what I want to focus on! I´m looking forward to meet the rest of the crew!! “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…”

Mariana Cordeiro

An artist, a believer, an optimist, a dreamer. Constantly dreaming of new places, new ways of living, new people and new ways of being happy, I very rarely have my feet firmly planted on the ground and yet I truly believe in hard work, passion and never giving up. A lover of the arts in each one of their expressions, I believe life is better with little snippets of color provided by the greatest artists in the world and dream of a day when culture will be as important as economics, politics or religion. That’s the kind of society I want to live in.I’m an optimist at heart and think that we can change the world if we believe in it and embrace that as our mission. Being a pirate is nothing but a little step and yet so important to get it started.

Pirates Testimony: Amalia and João

1st Edition: João Remondes

João Remondes

It’s so hard for me to put into words how Startup Pirates @ Lisboa changed the way I see the world. I expected a basic entrepreneurship training session but I got so much more. I could talk about the friends I made and the mentors I got, but that would be to diminish the full scope of this grand event. What I really got was an life altering experience that made me open my eyes and see the potential of human connections and the power of being an entrepreneur. I finally understood that to be an entrepreneur doesn’t necessarily mean that one must have a business but that it truly means being responsible for your own life.

2nd Edition: Amalia Ghiban

Amalia GhibanMy first encounter with Start Up Pirates, happened in February 2012. I was invited by one of the speakers to assists his workshop, and so I did. I was amazed by the spirit of all the participants, and one of them became one of the most valuable person in my life.

For the second encounter I decided to be a participant. In September 2012, for 9 full days, I shared my ideas, I connected with people, I gave and received feedback, I learned, I was challenged, I danced and had fun, I worked hard and most important I became part of a great crazy family! A lot of the things which I learned and some of the people I met, became part of my path and ultimately, part of who I am.

And this was not enough, I wanted more. They say ask and you will receive, and that´s what I did. For the 3rd edition I was part of the organizing crew! I was behind the scenes: planing, going to weekly meetings, promoting, taking charge of the recruiting and selection of the new generation of pirates, preparing coffee breaks and delivering workshops. I did it all, with a smile on my face and with the willingness to host an unforgettable experience for the becoming pirates.

For me, Start Up Pirates is not a singular event, is part of my growth journey, is not about entrepreneurship is about taking responsibility of my own life, is not about networking is about connection with people.

See you soon, at the 4th Edition of a crazy pirate family!!!
